Using Function Keys on a Toshiba Laptop Keyboard

Your Toshiba laptop contains not only a standard QWERTY keyboard, but also special keys that perform an array of tasks all by pressing one button instead of having to enter commands or navigate menus. The special keys, known as function keys, are above the main keys on your laptop's keyboard. Each function key performs a different task within Windows as well as within specific programs. In certain programs, you can assign different functions to the keys. The keys also perform tasks outside of the Windows environment.

F1 -- Security System

 1 Press and hold the "FN" key on the lower left-hand corner of your Toshiba keyboard.

 2 Press the "F1" key to activate the security system. Your laptop's screen will go blank so others can't see what you are working on or accessing.

 3 Press any key or touch the touchpad to exit the security mode.

F2 -- Power Save Mode

 4 Press and hold the "FN" key.

 5 Press the "F2" key to activate the Power Save mode and make changes to how your laptop handles operating on battery or AC power.

 6 Press "FN" and the "F2" key again to exit the power save mode.

F3 -- Standby Mode

 7 Press and hold the "FN" key.

 8 Press the "F3" key to place your laptop in Standby mode. The Standby dialog box will appear.

 9 Verify you want to enter Standby mode. Press the power button on your Toshiba laptop to exit Standby mode.

F4 -- Hibernation Mode

 10 Press and hold the "FN" key.

 11 Press the "F4" key to activate the Hibernation mode and save whatever documents and files that are open to your hard drive.

 12 Verify you want to enter Hibernation mode. Press the power button on your Toshiba laptop to exit Hibernation mode.

F5 -- Active Display Device/F6 and F7 -- Toshiba LCD Screen Brightness

 13 Press and hold the "FN" key.

 14 Press the "F5" key to change your laptop's active display device from the laptop screen to an external monitor.

 15 Click on the display configuration you want: displaying on both the laptop and external monitor; only on the laptop; only on the external monitor; or a specific screen resolution.

 16 Press and hold "FN" and "F5" to accept the new display settings. Press and hold "FN" and "F5" again to return to your laptop's display only.

 17 Press and hold the "FN" key.

 18 Press the "F6" key to decrease your laptop's screen brightness.

      Press the "F7" key to increase the brightness.

F8 -- Wireless Connection/Bluetooth

 19 Press and hold the "FN" key.

 20 Press the "F8" key to select the wireless Internet or Bluetooth connection you want to use.

 21 Press and hold "FN" and "F8" to make your selection. Release the keys to confirm your selection.

F9 -- Touchpad Control

 22 Press and hold the "FN" key.

 23 Press the "F9" key to enable your laptop's touchpad.

 24 Press and hold "FN" and "F9" again to disable the touchpad.

F10 and F11 -- Numeric Keypad/F12 -- Scroll Lock

 25 Press and hold the "FN" key.

 26 Press the "F10" key to enable your Toshiba laptop's numeric keypad.

 27 Press and hold "FN" and "F11" to enable the cursor control keys on the numeric keypad.

 28 Press and hold the "FN" and "F10" or "F11" key to disable the numeric keypad or cursor control keys.

 29 Press and hold the "FN" key.
 
 30 Press the "F12" key to lock your cursor on a specific line of text. Press and hold "FN" and "F12" to turn scroll lock off.

Tips & Warnings

    When using applications like Microsoft Word, Excel and other applications, your Toshiba laptop's function keys are controlled by that specific application. Consult the application's "Help" files or manuals for the specific functions assigned to those keys.
